Act Adoption

Welcome to Adoption Australia. The following is a little more information on what is involved in the adoption process.

In Australia, the rate of adoptions has decreased over the last 30 years, due to a number of factors. The changing attitude to single parents and the support that is offered to them contributes largely to this, as does easier access to birth control and abortions. However, there are now more options for those who are wanting to adopt. While adoptions of Australian born babies have decreased, inter-country adoptions have risen to almost twice the number of children locally adopted.

Local Adoptions in ACT generally follows the four-step format as follows:

An initial screening workshop; application; assessment allocation; placement post adoption order.

Adopting internationally is a longer process as you will need to be assessed both in Australia, and in the country you are adopting from. The adoption is usually finalised in the country that the child is from, however in some cases it is not finalised until the ACT court has made an adoption order.

If you are considering adoption then we can provide detailed information on the adoption process in your state, information on adopting a child from Australia, and details on inter-country (overseas) adoption. We also explain the eligibility criteria from countries that are open to adoption by Australian families, as well as information on estimated costs and fees in the adoption process. Information on international law and how this effects inter-country adoptions is also iincluded, and we list the contact details for agencies, support groups and non-governmental organisations involved in the adoption process.

We understand that the adoption process is a special time for families and that different families have different requirements. We are here to assist you regardless of your situation.
