Adopt Children

Welcome to Adoption Australia. The following is a little more information on what is involved in the adoption process.
If you are looking to adopt a child from within Australia or from one of the countries that Australia has an agreement with, then getting the right advice is important. In Australia you cannot go through a private agency, adoption has to go through the state department. The process varies between each state, and again between each country if you are consideing intercountry adoption. If you are thinking about adopting a child, having a good understanding of the process and what is involved can really help. This can be a stressful time for you and having support and guidance can make the process easier and more enjoyable.
We can provide detailed information on the adoption process in your state and within Australia. Inter-country (overseas) adoption is also something we can provide more information about, as well as the eligibility criteria from countries that are open to adoption by Australian families. Estimated costs and fees for the various adoption processes are provided, as well as information on international law and how this effects inter-country adoptions. Another way we can help is by detaling a list of contact details for agencies, support groups and non-governmental organisations involved in the adoption process.
Generally, the process for local adoption follows this format;
- Initial screening - Workshop, application and assessment - Allocation and placement - Post adoption order.
The process for intercountry adoption can vary between countries but in many cases it follows this format;
- Enquiry - Education program - Aplication, assessment and approval - Home study, and waiting for a child to be matched with you - Travel to meet and pick up your child - Supervision and application for your child to receive Australian citizenship - Completion – 1 year after receiving your child, both governments will finalise the adoption. We can assist you with this process by providing you with up to date information in an easy to read format, as well as ongoing assistance to make sure you are fully informed.
