The adoption of children in Australia can be a difficult process. All adoptions, both local and intercountry, are done through the public office. We also explain the eligibility criteria from countries that are open to adoption by Australian families, as well as information on estimated costs and fees in the adoption process. Specifics on international law and how this effects inter-country adoptions is also included, and we list the contact details for agencies, support groups and non-governmental organisations involved in the adoption process.
The number of babies available for adoption in Australia has decreased substantially since it peaked in 1971, however inter-country adoption has risen and now makes up 30% of all placements since 1979. It is interesting to note some of the changes that have occurred, for example, in the 60's and 70's around 65% of all placements were from teenage mothers; this has dropped to around 30%.
Here are some other interesting statistics; 41% of inter-country adoption are from South Korea; only 30% of the children up for adoption are from teenage mothers; one in six couples are infertile; in 1998 there were almost twice as many children adopted form other countries than from within Australia.
