Adopting Africa

Welcome to Adoption Australia. The following is a little more information on what is involved in the adoption process.

After making the decision to adopt a child from overseas you will then need to decide which country you are willing to adopt from. You can decide this after you have gone through the process for your state, however, it is important to start thinking about it early on.

If you are thinking of adopting a child from Africa we can provide the following;

Information on inter-country (overseas) adoption, details on the eligibility criteria for Africa, and information on international law and how this affects overseas adoptions. We also have detailed information on the adoption process in your state and what you may need to do to meet the eligibility criteria of your local state adoption department. Our service provides the stimated costs and fees, and contact details for agencies, support groups and non-governmental organisations that can help you. We can also inform you about what other options you may have, including possibilities for single parents or gay and lesbian couples wanting to adopt, and information on other countries you could adopt from.

The process differs between states and between countries but in many cases the adoption process follows this format.

- Enquiry - Education program - Application, assessment and approval - Home study, waiting and matching you with a child - Travel to Africa to meet and pick up your child - Supervision and application for your child to receive Australian citizenship - Completion – 1 year after receiving your child, both governments will finalise the adoption.

Providing a loving, safe and supportive environment for an underprivileged child is incredibly rewarding, but it is important to keep in mind that the system is there to place children with families who best meet their needs.
