The
adoption of babies in Australia has decreased substantially since it peaked
in 1971 at 10,000 however inter-country adoption has risen and now makes
up 30% of all placements since 1979. It is interesting to note some of
the changes that have occurred. In the 60's and 70's around 65% of all
placements were from teenage mothers now this has dropped to around 30%. many people choose to adopt children both from within Australia and from
other countries. There are a number of reasons for this. Infertility is,
of course, the major one with one in six couples affected by this. But
also as single people who for wish to start a family and couples who would
like to give an underprivileged child from another country a better life.
