Family Adoption

Welcome to Adoption Australia. The following is a little more information on what is involved in the adoption process.
Family adoption can mean two things: it can mean the adoption of a child that is related to you, or the adoption of a child that isn't related to the family. This is referred to as family adoption. All adoptions in Australia are done through the state department, even when you are adopting step-children, or other children related to you. In some states of Australia you cannot adopt a child that is related to you, but a different legal status, such as a permanent care order, could be a possibility.
Local adoption usually begins with an initial screening, which then moves onto a workshop. From there you file an application and are assessed, and move on to allocation and placement. The final stage is the post adoption order.
Overseas adoptions vary, but they generally begin with an enquiry, moving into an education program, an application, assessment, and approval. From there children are matched to the potential parents, and then the household travels to visit the child. That moves onto supervision and Visa applications. Once the process is completed, the country governments finalise the adoption.
We understand that the adoption process is a special time for families and that different families have different requirements. We are here to assist you regardless of your situation.
